An essay on reality (why we do what we do).

Catch believes that the real world is the original media channel. Life and commerce has always happened here, it’s where we have always met, socialised, ate, shopped, learnt, worked, played, and everything in-between.

A digital facsimile of these things now happen online, generally funded by interruptive, broadly disliked, and questionably effective advertising media, that is positioned as adjacent, but is usually in fact the primary purpose of the platform’s existence.

For us, the advertising in the real world (we call it physical media) is different. This media is truly adjacent to the life that happens around it, it’s passive. It informs and persuades without disrupting. It doesn’t demand to be seen, it’s just… seen.

The important things in life will always happen in the real world, and as people become more ambivalent and fatigued by digital media, it’s real world counterpart will become ever more important for the economy.

There’s nothing new here, the world has always had media, from storefronts to billboards, but It’s very rare for this “traditional” media to derive any real meaning from the world it’s in, and the life happening around it. This is a stark contrast to its online counterparts which evolve at runtime.

Catch was founded on the belief that there is a new horizon of opportunity in ‘zooming out” on the context and meaning of the media we see in the physical world, to understand the flow of the life surrounding it, and transact more like other media channels, without succumbing to their pitfalls.

Our mission, to that end, is to standardise, codify, and connect the world’s physical media to its audience, where the audience is the primary stakeholder, and their benefit and experience is the primary design consideration.

In doing so, we can contextualise this media relative to the environment and life happening around it. We believe this is of circular benefit, and will be a critical vector in sustaining the physical commerce and services that help our communities and cities prosper, just like online media has sustained the internet and smartphone economy for decades.

Our Story

2018

IOT BEGINNINGS

Catch began in Glasgow, Scotland in 2018, as Jason and Daniel were working on smart city IOT technologies, and developed an interactivity protocol for the Out of Home industry.

2019

FIRST DEPLOYMENT

Catch secured its first OOH media network in 2019, with 800 digital screens in Dubai. Daniel relocated to Dubai to deliver the project, and integrate the technology with live, operating OOH infrastructure and processes.

2020

UNTIMELY PUBLIC LAUNCH

Catch launched a public-facing OOH interactivity app in February 2020 in neighbourhoods in Dubai, and quickly reached impression:engagement ratios comparable to online ad channels. Campaigns with rewards or incentives attached saw very high transaction and conversion rates. Plans were already in place to deploy catch as a city-wide channel. A few weeks later, COVID changed the world, Dubai audiences were at home, stores were ordered to close, and commerce froze. We put the public service on pause, and waited for the world to go back to normal.

2020 - 2021

THE LONG PAUSE

As the pandemic endured, it was clear it would take time for the advertising industry to recover from months of lost revenue and empty screens. In June 2020, we made the difficult decision to stop waiting, and pull the project until further notice. For the 18 months that followed, the Catch team worked on other IOT projects, including the development of wireless audience measurement, and presence verification, both for retail applications.

2022

BUILDING FOR A NEW WORLD

In early 2022, we resumed work on the Catch Project, now incorporating our newly developed audience measurement technology and battle-tested presence validation technology developed for the retail industry over the pandemic hiatus. During the hiatus, onboarding programmatic technology had became the number one priority for every media operator in the industry. It was clear that this was not a temporary COVID correction. A total industry shift had taken place in our absence. Catch had to align. It seemed that our audience measurement technology was exactly the infrastructure the industry needed.

2023

CATCH 2.0

Tariq Hakkinen joined Catch as CEO in January 2023, bringing 20 years of advertising industry experience to an otherwise technology focused team. Catch was active in the market again as a new "2.0" offering, offering measurement, an operations dashboard, and mobile interactivity (now as an SDK and not a standalone app). Catch secured our first deployment for Flow audience measurement across 1,200 locations in Mid-2023, and deployments continued to grow from there.
